KI Food Safari with Maggie Beer at the Helm

South Australia’s favourite foodie, Maggie Beer, will return to lead the KI Food Safari alongside Southern
Ocean Lodge chefs from past and present.
Highlights in this year’s KI Food Safari itinerary include a special dinner created by The Lane Vineyard’s
Executive Chef James Brinklow, served with wines from the acclaimed Adelaide Hills winery.

Long Lunches

Long lunches also feature on the menu, including among the vineyards at Islander Estate, at Kate Sumner’s
Kangaroo Island Source at Penneshaw, with Hannaford and Sachs at Lifetime Retreats on the island’s north
coast and a long table lunch hosted by Maggie at Southern Ocean Lodge.

Island Expeditions

Island expeditions include visits to the Island Pure sheep dairy, Huxtable’s free range geese farm, Island
Beehive for the island’s pure Ligurian honey and the ground-breaking Aquaculture Skills Centre at Parndana
School where senior students produce sustainable barramundi and herbs for supply to the lodge. There are
oyster tastings at American River Oysters, and wild gin tastings at KI Spirits.

Maggie Beer and Asher Blackford

Maggie Beer will work alongside Southern Ocean Lodge Executive Chef Asher Blackford creating gala
dinners with guests joining the chefs in the kitchen. Former Lodge Chef Tim Bourke, who conceived the
Baillie Lodges local-produce philosophy and led the Southern Ocean Lodge kitchen for four years, will also
return for the event.

In a fitting connection, Tim Bourke recently joined Maggie Beer as Head Chef at her latest venture, The Farm Eatery and Experience Centre in the Barossa.

The low down

Running over seven nights from July 28 to 4 August,  the 2018 KI Food Safari is the sixth in the
series, and is part of a feast of special celebrations in the tenth year of operations for the luxury lodge.

Baillie Lodges owner James Baillie says the 2018 KI Food Safari is a wonderful reunion of some of South
Australia’s most passionate chefs and food producers who had been valuable friends and partners over the
property’s ten years on Kangaroo Island.
“We’ve been incredibly lucky to have worked with some fabulous food visionaries in the past and present,
including Maggie Beer, Tim Bourke and Asher Blackford, who have established great relationships with
many of Kangaroo Island’s producers. These local suppliers of fine food, wines, spirits and beers have
shaped the dynamic menu at Southern Ocean Lodge.” Mr Baillie says.
“The 2018 KI Food Safari is a chance to celebrate these rewarding partnerships and to welcome a growing
number of producers setting up exciting and diverse businesses on the island.”
