Shaw + Smith

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realise a long held dream to make wine together. The winery, in the Adelaide Hills, was built in time for the 2000 vintage and houses the Tasting Room, offices and all winemaking facilities from fermentation to bottling. The winery is regarded as the benchmark for winery developments in the Adelaide Hills and specialises in Sauvignon Blanc, M3 Chardonnay, cool climate Shiraz and Pinot Noir.

Tasting

The Shaw + Smith Tasting Room offers Wine Flights for visitors, a semi-formal tasting of the four wines, accompanied by a cheese sampler plate. Wine Flights are designed for one person, at a cost of $15 each. One Wine Flight is redeemable with a purchase of six or more bottles of wine. You can also purchase a glass or bottle of your favourite Shaw + Smith wine to enjoy on the summer terrace looking out towards Mount Lofty, or in winter relax in the lounge by the open fire. The Tasting Room is open from 11am to 5pm daily including public holidays, with the exception of Christmas Day.

Shaw + Smith, known as one of Australia’s best Sauvignon Blanc producers, has recently released its 25th Sauvignon Blanc vintage. The 2014 is lively and aromatic with notes of passionfruit, nashi pear and nettles. On the palate there is intense flavour, with fresh, limey fruit, mouth-watering acidity, and remarkable purity. It is bone dry and unbaked to maintain freshness.  It certainly gets the thumbs up from the team at The Finer Things.

The 2013 Shaw + Smith reds, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are about to be released. 2013 was a fine growing season. The Shaw + Smith 2013 Pinot Noir has fruit from Shaw + Smith’s high and cool Lenswood vineyard included for the first time.
