Spa review – Schwarz Alpine Spa and Golf Resort, Innsbruck, Austria

Where
The Schwarz Alpine Spa and Golf Resort is near Innsbruck in Austria.

Setting
The Schwarz Alpine Spa and Golf Resort is located in the pretty little village of Mieming, near Innsbruck and is one of the best wellness resorts in Austria. There is a range of accommodation to suit everyone – from families to Royal families – and a range of activities from golf to hiking and biking in summer, and from skiing to sledding and skating in winter. The superb Sun Welly Spa is open all year round and delivers 4000 square meters of pure pampering perfection. The spa has five saunas, one Turkish hammam, two private spas – including the indulgent Garden Room Suite – and a relaxation room with numerous waterbeds. There is also a Mind Oasis room for meditation or relaxing, that has hanging heated pod seats in orange leather around a fountain pool with a large crystal in the centre that glows in various colours. There are 14 massage rooms and nine rooms for beauty treatments, with a menu overflowing with options. Check out Water World as well, with seven heated indoor/outdoor pools including the Sole Pool, where you float while listening to soothing, whale-like sounds. Simply mesmerising.

Menu
Take your pick of massages, body treatments, facials and all kinds of beauty treatments. Next time, if I am so lucky to go back, I will choose the Bathe the Senses option, which starts with a fragrant bath by candlelight, followed by a massage using silk towels, brushes and warm oils, and finished off with a bit of a lay down in a water bed. Sigh. The beautiful mountains around don’t just look good, they provide all kinds of alpine flora that are part of the magic ingredient in the massage oils, creams and herbal tinctures. Whatever they are made of, they feel divine on the skin.

Treatment selected
I choose a treatment they assured me would loosen tight muscles, and sink into what feels like a water bed before being coated with an enriching mud containing plenty of nutrients from local plants. I am wrapped in a cocoon of warm oblivion and after a time, am unwrapped in a state of bliss.

What I loved
The pools, the spa, the convivial atmosphere over dinner, the food and the location. Every thing about this place is food for the soul.
